What are machines?
The first machine you’ll need to know is the wiring tool.
Wiring Tool
You’ll learn the recipe for the wiring tool the first time you pick up coal.
Some machines send signals, some machines receive signals, and some do both. Equip your wiring tool and point it at a machine to find out if it receives or sends by revealing its hotspots.

To make a connection, equip your wiring tool and click one machine’s send hotspot, then click another machine’s receive hotspot. In the example below, the switch is connected to the LED. Once that connection is made, flipping the switch would turn the LED on and off!
Now let’s look at all of the different machines, starting with the switch.
Switch
The switch works just like. a switch! Flip it on to send an an ON or TRUE signal, flip it off for OFF/FALSE.
Pressure Plate
The pressure plate is just like the switch, except it’s only in a TRUE state when something’s pressing on the plate. Step off the plate and it sends FALSE.

Here are a few machine-related hotkeys:
Advanced settings for the switch and LED
We can use a machine’s device settings menu to set advanced options (like an LED’s color), or to manually create connections. By matching one machine’s SENDS code with another machine’s RECEIVES code, we create a connection without using the wiring tool. In the image above, the switch and the LED share the matching code «rockster», so they’re connected. That’s a useful function for keeping complex circuits organized, or connecting distant machines.
LEDs shine when they’re wired up, but they really come to life when you adjust their advanced options. Each LED block can be assigned a unique color (bring up the LED’s device settings menu and adjust its red green blue values), so you’re never more than a few LED blocks away from an intense multicolor light show.
Delay Gate
The delay gate is an advanced machine that doesn’t do anything on its own. But when the delay gate is connected between a sender (like a switch) and a receiver (like an LED), signals will travel through the delay gate, which counts down a delay before sending the signal forward.
Inverter Gate
The inverter gate flips any signal it receives to its opposite value.
In the illustration below, the switch sends an ON signal directly to the LED on the left, but that signal also passes through the inverter gate on the right, becoming an OFF signal that shuts the right LED off.
Flip-Flop Gate
The flip-flop gate acts like an inverter gate half of the time. When the flip-flop gate receives a positive signal (i.e. a switch flipping on, or Hotfoot hopping on to a pressure plate) it switches its output from TRUE to FALSE, or vice versa.
The flip-flop gate only cares about positive signals, so nothing happens when a switch connected to a flip-flop turns off, or Hotfoot hops off of that pressure plate.
Logic Gate
The logic gate compares two input signals and outputs TRUE or FALSE based on the rules of logic.
The logic gate has two inputs, so we can hook up anything that sends a signal (switches, pressure plates, other logic gates. ) to each one. But the output we get depends on which logical operator we choose.

Number Pad + Number Comparison Gate
Here are two advanced machines that you’re going to want to use together. The number pad lets you send a numeric code, and the number comparison gate can receive numeric codes, compare them, then output TRUE or FALSE.
In the example below, the number pad is hooked to a number comparison gate, which is set to compare the number pad’s input to a value. If you enter the correct value on the number pad, the comparison gate sends a TRUE signal and the door opens. If you enter an incorrect code, the door shuts.

Basic information [ ]
With the Wiring Tool that was introduced with update R33 in August 2016, you can connect activation devices, like:
to activatable objects and devices, like:
optionally together with operating gates placed in between:
to activate the objects listed above; to open and/or close Doors or Gates, to switch on and/or off Lights, Fans or Beacons, spawners and/or block phasers in different ways.
With this system you can lock your doors, you can make doors open or lights switch on from a distance or can create fans for elevators or ice railways, can make creatures and treasure chests spawn (that you can fill with objects for other players), and can make blocks appear or disappear like walls of labyrinths or complete buildings.
Since R36 you cannot re-wire objects of other players anymore except if you have the according permission rank defined by them.
Here’s how it works (DIY) [ ]
Equip your Wiring Tool and use it to point at devices with your cursor. Basic informations will now be displayed on the blue screen hovering above your Wiring Tool on the right side of the screen.
Type «v» (as the default key) to either show or hide the blue connection lines (like cables) between devices that you will wire up.
Type «k» (as the default key) to cut wires / cancel specific connections while pointing at the «hotspots» (small white icons with arrows to indicate either «send» or «receive» contact points).
To create a simple connection, let’s connect a Door or Lamp to a Switch or to a Pressure Plate.
First of all place a door (or lamp) and switch (or pressure plate) into the gameworld. Then equip your Wiring Tool und use it to point at the door/lamp with the cursor.
Next point the cursor at the Switch (or Pressure Plate) that you have placed. Find the white «send»-hotspot (a small white arrow pointing up from a sphere) and click on it.
Done! Now the Switch (or Pressure Plate) is wired to the door (or lamp) and you’ll see a blue line (wire) connecting both.
Give it a try now: either use that switch (with the right mouse button or «f» as the default key) or step on the pressure plate to see what happens 😉
Wiring details and permission-settings [ ]
Next let’s inspect the devices and objects you’ve wired up a bit closer. Point at the door or lamp while wearing your Wiring Tool and type «n».
See the word «input» with the long line of numbers in the «RECEIVES»-array? This tells you which other object or device the current one is connected to. As long as nothing has been connected you’ll simply read «Input Event Name» in this array.
Objects like Doors, Lamps, Beacons, Fans, Gates and LEDs will display only a «RECEIVES»-array.
Activation devices (Switches, Pressure Plates and Number Pads) will display only a «SENDS»-array.
Gates (Number Comparison Gates, Delay Gates, Flip-Flop Gates, Inverter Gates and Logic Gates) have both types of hotspots and arrays; receiving ones as well as sending ones.
You can change the number (coordinates) in the array into any kind of word or code of your choice. Then you can type the same word/code into a device that you want to connect this object/device to. Wireless connection!
With this you can wire up any door, lamp etc. to any switch, pressure plate etc. across a whole gameworld from one corner of the map to the opposite (confirmed by tests). Be careful though to use a code/word that cannot be guessed easily, otherwise other players can activate your objects if they should use the same code/word with their activation device/s.
You can «uncheck» = disable (or check = enable) the round dot next to «can interact» to «lock» the object so it cannot be opened/closed or switched on/off by directly activating it («f» or right-click), but only by using a device.
Next you can change permission-settings of most items by using the padlock in the top right corner, so that either only you or selected players with an according authorization «rank» can use these items. However this does not really work «intuitively» and might not do what you think it should.
Please note that doors can still be opened by everyone even if you set them to «just me», as long as you don’t deactivate the button for «can interact» (directly below the code/coordinate array in the «inspection window»).
However if you deactivate this button (also possible with lamps, fans, beacons, etc.) then even you yourself cannot manually interact with the now «locked» object anymore! Instead you too will have to use switches, pressure plates and/or number pads to activate that object (to open doors / trap doors, switch on lamps, fans, beacons etc.).
For LEDs you can also change their colors by sliding the small pointers. «Auto reset time» is an optional function that will automatically close an opened door/gate or will switch off an activated lamp/device again by itself after the number of seconds that you can define yourself in the small array (like by using the small slider).
How to lock doors for example [ ]
Please note that since update R33 2/3 Number Pads and Switches can now be used by every other player, even those set to «visitor» (before that it was possible to define who would be allowed to use the devices by using the padlock symbol).

Wiring Tool
The Wiring Tool is necessary to wire «electric» devices together, but also to see and adjust their settings.
You can connect activation devices like Switches, Number Pads, Pressure Plates or Sensors to usable objects like Doors, Gates, Lamps (including LEDs), Fans, Beacons, Mob Spawners, Loot Spawners, Block Phasers, Trap Doors, Campfires, Fire Pits or Arc Signs, and you can use Gates of different kinds in between for operations (Logic Gates, Number Comparison Gates, Delay Gates or Flip-Flop Gates).
The Wiring Tool has infinite durability and can (only) be crafted in your Crafting Menu (to be opened with «q» as the default key), after the according crafting recipe has been unlocked.

To use this tool you will have to place it into your tool slot (right-click on the Wiring Tool your inventory). After equipping it you can cycle between weapon, Arctek gauntlet and tool with «TAB» (as the default key) to activate and actually use it.
When activated, the Wiring Tool HUD will be displayed, looking like a blue screen hovering above the right arm of your player character.
Depending on what you are looking at (pointing with the crosshair cursor in the middle of your screen) you will be shown specific information and settings of wireable devices and objects.
Only when looking at wireable items with the Wiring Tool activated you will be able to see at least one of these small indicator icons (sometimes even several of them) on them:
Now you can click on a Send Hotspot to create a wire. With the Wiring Tool activated, you can see wires of blue light running from this Hotspot to the arm of your player character. To connect this wire with any receiving object like a door or a gate, you will have to point your cross-hair cursor to a Receive Hotspot and click on it. You should then be able to see the blue wire connecting both Hotspots.
With «N» as the default key you can open the settings menu of any wireable item. In this window you can then configure the device or object.
For example you can connect sender and receiver together by simply typing the same codeword of your choice into the according arrays («sends», «receives») of both devices instead of wiring them up manually, you can set automatic reset times, you can decide between different conditions for logic gates, you can define custom colors for LEDs and much more, depending on the device or object.

Programmable Villager

Basic Information [ ]
Obtaining [ ]
The main way of obtaining Programmable Villagers is finding naturally-spawning Villagers and completing their events. Each completed event will give 1-3 Programmable Villagers as a reward.
Alternatively, Programmable Villagers can be purchased from the Store in packs of 5 or 25, or purchased as part of a building kit for a Blueprint. Buying them as part of a Blueprint is currently the cheaper option.
Programmable Villagers cannot be crafted, nor are they available in Creator Mode.
Usage [ ]
Programmable Villagers can be placed into the game world by putting (a stack of) them into your quickbar, selecting the according quickslot and clicking the right mouse button while pointing at a spot in the game world with your cursor. Placing a Programmable Villager will place a flat base block, which will then spawn the Villager on top of it.
The base of the Programmable Villager can be rotated into all directions by pressing and holding R and then pointing the mouse cursor at the block and moving the mouse while holding the left mouse button. However, this will not rotate the spawned NPC. This can be used to hide the NPC base from plain view.
You won’t need any Power Cells (Mining Cell) to pick up Programmable Villagers that have been placed into the game world. Of course you won’t be able to pick up such objects on game worlds, on player claims or in Adventures where your Permission rank is not sufficient (mainly when you are merely a visitor), which can only be changed by the owner of the game world, claim owner or Adventure creator.
How to customize/wire [ ]
To customize the appearance, behavior or job of your Programmable Villager, you need to equip a Wiring Tool, aim at the base of the Programmable Villager (not the villager itself), and press ‘N’. This will open up the wiring UI with several fields and buttons:
Archetypes [ ]
If a Villager has an archetype selected, they will give you loot approximately once every 15 (real time) minutes if the necessary conditions are met. There are currently six different archetypes: Logger, Miner, Chef, Researcher, Apothecary and Treasure Hunter. Each of these needs to be unlocked by obtaining the corresponding upgrade chip, either from completing Villager events or from Treasure Chests. If you approach a Villager who is ready to give loot, they will wave at you.
Since the R2.75.19 update on Dec 18th 2020, a Programmable Villager will no longer give loot immediately upon placement, but only after 15 minutes have passed. Instead, interacting with the villager will tell you whether they are happy with their surroundings or not.
For all archetypes, if two Villagers with the same archetype are too close (same or neighboring chunks*), neither will give loot, so take care not to place them close together.
*A chunk is a 16 by 16 block grid square locked to world coordinates. For reference, player claims are 64 by 64 blocks, and a horizontal slice of the claim contains 16 chunks. «Neighbouring» refers to the 8 chunks around the one the villager is in.
Known issue: if you teleport too close to a Villager, you may need to go some distance away and return for them to actually give you loot.
Logger [ ]
The Logger archetype can be unlocked by finding a Logger Villager in Taigas and completing their event, or by finding the Villager Upgrade: Logger chip in a Stone Treasure Chest or Obsidian Treasure Chest (around 3% chance).
A Logger will give loot if there are any surface wood blocks nearby (in the current or any neighboring chunk). Having at least 128 of the same wood gives a chance for more loot. If there is more than one sort of wood nearby, which loot you will get is random.
As loot, a Logger will give Wood, Leaves and Flowers corresponding to the wood type nearby, and may also give Beeswax and Queen Bees.
Miner [ ]
The Miner archetype can be unlocked by finding a Miner Villager in Stalactite layer caves near Mineral Water and completing their event, or by finding the Villager Upgrade: Miner chip in a Stone Treasure Chest or Obsidian Treasure Chest (around 3% chance).
A Miner will give loot if there are any ore nodes (except Coal) nearby (in the current or any neighboring chunk). Having at least 9 of the same ore in the area will double the amount of loot. Unlike the Logger, if there are more than one sort of ore nodes in the area, the highest ore tier takes precedence, so if there are both obsidian and iron nodes in range, you will only get iron as loot. Note that due to the large range of the Miner, it is likely that you will get iron loot from a miner on the surface, and can get lumite loot from the lower parts of the Stalactite layer.
The different loots you can get from a Miner are:
The Chef archetype can be unlocked by finding a Chef Villager in Dunes near oases (or sandy Shore near shorewood trees) and completing their event, or by finding the Villager Upgrade: Chef chip in a Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 0.8% chance).
A Chef will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
Having no Dirt, Mud, Sand, Tallgrass nor any related blocks or variation (including processed versions like slopes, stairs, slabs, and also the Retro versions) in the same chunk will double the amount of loot.
As loot, a Chef will give 6-24 of any Food that can be cooked at a Cooking Station, and can also give Questionable Jerky.
Researcher [ ]
The Researcher archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Researcher chip in a Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 1.9% chance).
A Researcher will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
Having no other Programmable Villagers nearby will increase the amount and variety of loot.
As loot, a Researcher will give Notes and Data Chips.
Apothecary/PotionMaker [ ]
The Apothecary/PotionMaker archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Apothecary chip in a Stone Treasure Chest, Obsidian Treasure Chest, Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 2-6% chance, best are obsidian and iron).
An Apothecary will give loot during the day if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
As loot, the Apothecary will give the following 4-16 of the following potions:
If you have at least 16 of each the required blocks above, and 16 blocks of Bog Water as well, you will also get loot during the night: 4-32 of any of the potions mentioned above, or 1-8 of any Perfume. Note that it is likely that what matters is the time of day during which the loot is generated, not when it is picked up, so if you wander into the Apothecary’s range during the day, you will probably get daytime loot even if you actually pick it up at night.
Treasure Hunter [ ]
The Treasure Hunter archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Treasure Hunter chip in a Stone Treasure Chest, Obsidian Treasure Chest, Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 2-6% chance, best are obsidian and iron).
A Treasure Hunter will give placeable Treasure Chests as loot depending on its surroundings. It requires darkness to give any loot. The Treasure Hunter will always give the best loot that matches it’s surroundings, meaning if you match the conditions for both diamond and stone treasure chests, you will always get diamond treasure chests. The possible loot conditions are:
Known issues: Having a (pet) Thing near the Treasure Hunter is supposed to make it give 2 treasure chests instead of 1, but that does not currently seem to be working.
Repairer [ ]
The Repairer archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Repairer chip in a Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 0.7% chance from diamond).
A Repairer will allow repairing one Armor piece, Weapon or Power Cell to full durability around every 15 minutes if there are the following blocks nearby (same or neighboring chunk):
If the Repairer is ready to repair an item, interacting with it will open a window that shows all equipment that is either equipped or in the inventory of the player. To repair an item, either drag it to the item slot on the right, or right-click on the item you wish to repair.
Machinist [ ]
The Machinist archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Machinist chip in a Iron Treasure Chest or Diamond Treasure Chest (around 2% chance from diamond).
A Machinist will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
Since ordinary LEDs count as both arctek-related blocks and LEDs, the easiest way to meet these conditions is to have at least 32 ordinary LED blocks nearby. Having one of each sort of Keepa nearby gives a chance for double loot.
As loot, a Machinist will give different wireable items like Switches, Fans, Logic Gates etc.
Gardener [ ]
The Gardener archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Gardener chip in a Stone Treasure Chest, Obsidian Treasure Chest or Iron Treasure Chest (best chance is obsidian treasure chests with a chance of around 5.5%).
A gardener will give loot if there is at least one Crop nearby (Wheat, Crisphead Lettuce, Turnip, Horned Melon, Bamboo, Prickly Pal Cactus, Big Pokey Cactus, Desert Succulent, Brown Mushroom, Red Mushroom, Glowing Mushroom). The growth stage of the crop does not matter, having seeds or spores nearby is enough, even if they are fallow. Having at least 9 of a specific crop will give double loot for that type of crop. If there is more than one crop nearby, which will be used for calculating loot is random. As loot, the Gardener gives the type of seeds and crops that grow nearby.
Unlike most other NPC archetypes, there can be up to 4 Gardeners in the same area before they stop giving loot.
Rancher [ ]
The Rancher archetype can only be unlocked by finding the Villager Upgrade: Rancher chip in a Stone Treasure Chest, Obsidian Treasure Chest or Iron Treasure Chest (best chance is obsidian treasure chests with a chance of around 5.5%).
The Rancher will give loot if there are 1-3 of the same type of Creatures nearby, whether as pets or natural mobs. As loot, they will give the same type of loot as a tamed creature of the same type. When there are up to 2 of the same type of creatures nearby, the amount of loot will be 8 times what you would get from a tamed creature, and when there are 3 creatures of the same type nearby, the amount of loot will be 16 times what you would get from a tamed creature.
Explosives Expert [ ]
The Explosives Expert archetype can only be unlocked by finding an Explosives Expert Villager in the Canyons and completing its event. It can not currently be found in any treasure chests.
The Explosives Expert will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
For 5 times as much loot, you must meet the higher tier conditions:
Note that you may still occasionally get the lower tier loot amount even if you meet the higher tier conditions.
As loot, Explosives Experts will give 1-3 (1-15 if meeting high tier conditions) Explosive Bombs, TNT or Stun Bombs.
Toolmaker [ ]
The Toolmaker archetype can only be unlocked by finding a Toolmaker Villager in the Mountains and completing its event. It can not currently be found in any treasure chests.
The Toolmaker will give Mining Cells as loot depending on its surroundings. It will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
If you meet the conditions of more than one level of mining cells, which one you get will be random.
Known issues: it seems that for Iron Mining Cells, you need at least 8 Iron Chairs or Iron Tables, instead of the 2 required for every other type of mining cell.
Blacksmith [ ]
The Blacksmith archetype can only be unlocked by finding a Blacksmith Villager in the Caves and completing its event. It can not currently be found in any treasure chests.
The Blacksmith will give different swords as loot based on its surroundings. It will give loot if there are the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):
If you meet the conditions of more than one type of sword, which one you get will be random.
Outfitter [ ]
The Outfitter archetype can only be unlocked by finding a Outfitter Villager in the Caves and completing its event. It can not currently be found in any treasure chests.
The Outfitter will give 1-2 pieces of Armor as loot based on its surroundings. For leather armor, you will need the following blocks nearby (in the same or neighboring chunk):

If you meet the conditions of multiple types of armor, which type you will get is random.
